Her mobile phone woke her. It was dark, and she was so deeply asleep that it took her a moment or two to realise what was making the noise. She wriggled her arm free from underneath Nelson and groped for her phone.

‘Liz!’ It was Tilly, her tone urgent. ‘You’ll never guess what’s happened.’

‘What? What time is it?’

‘Seven-ish… Carolyn Grogan’s dead!’

‘What?’

‘She died at the Regent. I’ve just heard.’

‘Oh my God.’ Liz switched the lamp on. She’d slept for hours. She rubbed her eyes, trying to rouse herself. ‘Are you sure?’

‘Very sure.’

‘What did she die of?’

‘A heart attack.’ Tilly hesitated. ‘All I can think is that now she can’t come after Mags. Does that make me an awful person?’
